Lakeland College Ranch & Stockhorse Rider Program
Intro

Overview

The eight-month program startes in September. Students bring their own three to four-year-old colt and start colt training immediately. Groundwork and basic training take up the first eight weeks. Safety and creating a willing attitude in the horse are emphasized.

Students and their ranch horses move into performance training in the second eight weeks. More advanced maneuvers, as used in ranch horse competitions, reining and cow horse will be the focus of this section.

After the Christmas break, students will use their horses for the cattle handling classes, where they hone stockmanship skills and roping techniques while enhancing their horsemanship.

Throughout the program, students will take courses, such as nutrition, first aid, cattle diseases, equine husbandry, hoof care, grazing management and marketing.
