Judge’s Ruling Closes Horse Slaughterhouse

Found this in the Chicagoist.com this afternoon.

March 30, 2007

Chicagoist hasn’t ever eaten horse meat. We don’t really have a moral objection to it, any more than we have a moral objection to eating veal, lamb, chicken, frog legs, fois gras, and on and on; we just haven’t eaten it.

But some people do have a moral objection, and those people are feeling pretty happy after the nation’s only operational horse slaughterhouse, DeKalb County-based Cavel International Inc., Continue Reading »

A Northernhorse fan from South Africa

Howdy from South Africa!

I am in the process of immigrating to Canada, and often visit the NorthernHorse website (looking for my potential new horse, LOL) and I really like the new look. I just wanted to say well done!

I like the provincial flags next to the links, that helps a lot! :-) I will be moving to Saskatchewan, hopefully by middle July this year.

Keep up the good work!
Kind Regards

A major Ottawa horse show that brought an average of 20,000 people to the area each year has been canceled over a financial conflict with the city.

The 2007 Capital Classic Show Jumping Tournament and Festival won’t run this year because the city downloaded expenses to the event and increased show costs by 70 per cent,  Capital Classic president Ralph Shaw said Monday.

The show had been paying $30,000 rent a year to use the 270-acre Nepean National Equestrian Park, including upkeep like watering the grounds, staffing the park and extraneous costs that the city now says  must come from the show’s coffers, Mr. Shaw said. Continue Reading »

The newly completed equine genome map will be an invaluable asset for those looking to breed and manage the ideal equine athlete, as well as giving researchers a whole new set of tools for investigating equine disease.

According to Dr. Claire Wade, a senior research scientist at the Broad Institute of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, by testing horses for an array of genetic traits linked to athleticism, it will be easier to decide which horses are likely to succeed. Continue Reading »

Police in Hong Kong are investigating an elaborate device found embedded in the turf at a world-famous horse track which was apparently designed to shoot poison darts at the horses at the start of a race.
