Horse slaughterhouse under fire for environmental issues
The Humane Society of the United States has filed a 60-day notice of intent to sue the Cavel International horse slaughterhouse in DeKalb, Illinois. for repeatedly violating the federal Clean Water Act.
Horse herpes outbreak “stable-ized”
After an outbreak of equine herpes virus that led to the euthanization of two horses and the voluntary quarantine of three stables on the Coastside, veterinarians are saying that the situation is under control.

Veterinarians for Equine Welfare create website
A group of veterinary professionals, known as Veterinarians for Equine Welfare (VEW), has launched a new website to serve as a resource for information about the proper treatment of horses.
The website www.vetsforequinewelfare.org, also will provide information about humane options for horse owners who can no longer care for their animals. The veterinarians created the organization with the goal of correcting misinformation about animal welfare.
Maryland horses cleared of equine herpes virus
The Maryland Department of Agriculture has received the final outstanding equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) negative test results taken last week, for a total of 62 negative tests.
California Equine Herpesvirus Update
Five horses have been confirmed positive for equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) in San Mateo County, Calif. Results are pending on one other horse. Three horses have been euthanatized, and three are undergoing acyclovir antiviral treatment.
Move to boost horse’s importance in Scotland
The British Horse Society launched a manifesto yesterday for the horse in Scotland, setting out priorities to boost the Scottish equine industry.
