Friday and Lola

I have been waiting for a couple of weeks for my Josie mare to foal. She has been in the foaling stall every night (and some days due to the rain) where I can closely watch her so as to not miss being there just in case she could use my help. She is due to have a full brother or sister to “Keeper”, my saddle horse.

We also have a maiden mare Friday who I have been putting in and out with Josie just to get her used to the routine. She was starting to udder and I was going to put her in the foaling stall next.

Well, my grandson Davan who goes to work with his mom early in the morning, came running in this morning to tell me that Friday has a baby. Yup, the maiden mare foaled with no supervision or help from me. I watched Josie all nite but really didn’t think Friday was that close. After 40 years of foaling mares you would think that I would be better at it but….

A very pretty buckskin filly. By Debbie Johnson’s palomino AQHA dressage horse Nicky and Friday who is a dark bay. Friday had cleaned, has the baby sucking & pooping and is quite calm about the whole thing.

Nicky has been doing well in the dressage ring and Friday did well in her brief show career. We will see which way Lola (the grandkids name them almost before they are born) is inclined.

So now I join the ranks of lucky people with a baby horse to pet.  And this is certainly a horse of a different colour for me. My babies are always all bays and sorrels with the odd gray. On the other hand, she could be any colour and I would be happy to pet her. She is a cutie.

Been waiting and waiting - just had to tell someone.

Dave just came in and says Josie looks like she is about to get with it. Finally.
