The Farm Sale
This weekend we had a farm auction to sell all the stuff our parents had accumulated over their lifetimes. Some of you horse people may have known my Mom, E.J. (Betty) McKenzie. She raised a few horses every year since coming to the farm – she stood a son of Doc’s Jack Frost for years. Mom passed away last year during the big storm at the age of 80 years. Dad only made 48 years but the acreage they had acquired with their hard work provided mom with the funds she needed to buy a farm – her lifelong dream.
There is something really strange about watching people sort through the stuff that belonged to your parents. Sometimes your mind wants to make the objects “special” simply because they belonged to people you loved. I do have a few reminders from over the years but my only purchase at the sale was “the stoneboat”. The grandkids fell in love with it when we were using it to haul all the heavy stuff out to the sale site. When I told them I would buy them whatever they wanted from the sale, the stoneboat won hands down. I got it for $5.00.
One of the grandsons who is quite an entrepreneur bought the mole traps (or rather knows Nana will reimburse him as promised) and has already approached us about doing some custom mole trapping. Unless the excessive amount of rain we have had here is drowning them, he could be a rich kid by fall. I was also happy to see that another of our grandsons chose Mom’s old fishing rod as his purchase. She caught some darned nice trout with that rod and it will bring joy to us to watch him enjoy it.
But mostly this whole experience has been a reminder of what a treasure my brother and husband and children and friends are. I love them so. I just want to say “THANKS”.
