Low-flying Planes Pinpoint Water

Another interesting tidbit gleaned from the Ropin the Web newsletter.

If you’re driving along the Queen Elizabeth II highway between Edmonton and Red Deer, you may notice low-flying aircraft crossing the roadway.  Between December 1, 2007 and March 31, 2008, the aircraft will help locate undetected underground water supplies using electromagnetic waves.  This technique, known as airborne geophysics, allows geophysical information to be collected without disturbing the land. The aircraft will be flying about 120 meteres from the ground between Pigeon Lake and Camrose, and as far south as Red Deer, for a total of 70 flying days.

ALERT Line Helps Livestock & Owners

The Ropin’ The Web newsletter brought our attention to the Livestock Care Action Line & Response Team. I quote the newsletter:

The vast majority of livestock owners are attentive to the needs of their livestock and ensure daily care. Unfortunately, this is not always the case and animals can suffer as a result. Often poor care arises due to lack of knowledge, life’s pressures, sickness, and absentee owners. Financial hardships, coupled with tough winter conditions, add extra challenges.  The confidential Livestock Care Action Line and Response Team (ALERT) strives to nip problems in the bud.  Often one call can help many animals and their owners.  ALERT only participates with the consent of the livestock owner. You can report a livestock care concern by calling 1-800-506-2273.  For more information on ALERT, visit the Alberta Farm Animal Care website.
