Good News About the Cold Weather

If it helps make this terrible cold weather a tiny bit more bearable I am hearing that this extreme cold is probably getting rid of some of the pine beetles. This may slow down their destruction of our pine forests in western & northern Alberta. Hopefully it is helping in BC too. Just a positive thought to help keep you warm.

Carl & Mary Ellen Wilson 50 Year AQHA Award

Congratulations to Carl & Mary Ellen Wilson on being awarded the 50 Year Breeder Award by the AQHA. One of only 120 breeders to have received this award, the Wilsons are the only Canadians so far. Although they presently live west of Rimbey, they spent many years near Sundre. Continue Reading »

Some people may find it funny to write a memorial about a horse, but like most people that pass on, horses leave an impact on your heart. Continue Reading »

My Crazy Northern Horses

Winter Herd

This afternoon it is slightly colder than minus 35 degrees. Been dropping to below minus 40 degrees at night. Bitter cold. Even my thickest gloves won’t keep my fingers warm to feed a few bales. Had to go to the house and get mitts.

Went up the pasture to check the horses. Lots of tracks show they have been home and spending time in the sheds but I like to actually see them at least every couple of days. Continue Reading »

New Website Makeover

Caballos del Rio Ranch

The new website makeover for Tracy Patterson & Dene Berry of Caballos del Rio Ranch located at Sundre, Alberta has gone public today. We think the rich colors and dramatic sky make a stunning background for their beautiful Andalusian & Azteca Horses. The ranch itself is set in one of Alberta’s most beautiful areas.

You may notice when you view the pedigrees of their horses in, for example, their salebarn that you can click on any of the horses and bring up a full pedigree (and photo if available) for that horse. Tracy is just getting all her horse information added to the site but even in the “Production” area for each horse you can click on the link and bring up a full pedigree of the individual and photo. In fact because of the “Picture Gallery” feature there are multiple photos of some individuals already and I am sure they will continue to add to these areas as time permits.

Congratulations Tracy and Dene. We will be checking back often to see more of these beautiful horses.

Alberta Farm Vehicles Challenged in Montana

Alberta Agriculture and Food is advising farmers to only use clear, taxed fuel when driving in Montana and possibly other states.

From the Jan 21, 2008 Issue of Agri-News:

Montana does not allow the use of marked (dyed) fuel in licensed vehicles. Alberta farmers, with farm plated vehicles, using marked gasoline or diesel fuel, are subject to fines when operating south of the border. Continue Reading »

Cloning & Slaughterhouses

I came across this interesting article about a clone of the last surviving daughter of Doc Bar, Doc’s Serendipity selling at auction. The article goes on to point out that the closing of the slaughterhouses in the U.S. is having a negative impact on the cloning of horses. Quite a bit of interesting reading here. Read the article

Horse Breeders & Owners Conference

Once again the Alberta horse industry travelled to Red Deer to take in the annual Horse Breeders & Owners Conference. The exhibit hall hosted over 60 sponsors, a record for the event, and 660 people were on-site for the socializing, seminars and networking opportunities afforded by this annual, mid-winter, equine educational event. The Diving Horse – Atlantic City (Video)

The diving horse is only a tiny part of this fairly short video so if you don’t have high speed you may not want to take the time to download but it is quite a feat. There is a written article with photos that has much more information.
