This was a question that I wanted to confirm absolutely with Dr. Timoney before answering to the list. Unfortunately Dr. Timoney was out of the country and then unavailable, and it has taken a while to get a reply, but I am now happy to be able to present it:
Dr. Timoney replied:
“There is no scientific evidence to indicate the need to quarantine a stallion following revaccination against EVA. Regretfully, this is not spelled out in the American Horse Council’s Guidelines published in 1997. What is not widely recognized is that only 50% or so of first time vaccinated stallions will shed detectable virus via the respiratory tract for a very limited period, in the majority of cases that do, for less than one week. Frankly, the risks associated with direct/indirect spread of the vaccine virus are exaggerated. They are very different to the risks associated with cases of primary infection with field strains of equine arteritis virus.”
Item 2:
We have recently posted the item below on our web site under the “news” section of the main page at http://www.equine-reproduction.com It is important that anyone using cooled transported semen within the USA read
it and be aware of the possibility of State restrictions.
