Good News About the Cold Weather

If it helps make this terrible cold weather a tiny bit more bearable I am hearing that this extreme cold is probably getting rid of some of the pine beetles. This may slow down their destruction of our pine forests in western & northern Alberta. Hopefully it is helping in BC too. Just a positive thought to help keep you warm.

I had just been looking that up on the internet. It says that In the winter, temperatures must consistently be below -35 Celsius or -40 Celsius for several straight days to kill off large portions of mountain pine beetle populations. Well we have had -35 – -50 for 3 days in Alberta so I sure hope that is considered several :)

I welcome this cold weather as it is much needed and growing up in the forests of BC and seeing the damage that the pine beetle has caused makes this cold snap worth it. Hopefully the pine forest of Alberta will stay green for many years to come. And the horses don’t seem to mind it either!
