Keeping Endangered Draft Breeds Viable

Suffering dramatic drops in numbers of registered animals, several European draft horse breed societies are coming up with targeted promotional campaigns in order to keep their breeds alive.

In England, the critically endangered Suffolk is an ideal horse for riders who require a sturdy mount, according to Amanda Hillier, spokesperson for the Suffolk Society of England. Strong, yet agile, “it has a superb temperament and is just a really good all-around horse,” she said.

Transported Semen Permits and Restrictions in the USA

Following the outbreak of Equine Viral arteritis (EVA) that significantly affected the Quarter Horse industry, some States are implementing and enforcing permit requirements with regard to shipped semen. Skunks, Skunks and More Skunks

A skunk moved into the basement of our old house. We discovered this a couple of days before we had to leave for the coast. Nobody realized there was a wee hole under the deck that led directly into the basement. One of our daughters (Daina) lives in that house and she wasn’t particularly impressed about this. ACVO, of the University of Florida veterinary school, led the panel at the in-depth session on ophthalmology at the 2007 AAEP convention in Orlando, Fla., held Dec. 1-5. Britain’s Shire Horses Threatened

This interesting little video from National Geographic claims there are only about 3500 Shire horses left of the million or so that used to live in Britain and that the number of breeding mares being kept each year is less than the number that need replacing. I have no idea how many Shires there are in Canada & the US. Does anybody know this? watch the video
