Wonderful George

Yesterday was a particularly wonderful day. Why you ask? Because when I called the herd home for lunch George, my 26 year old retired saddle horse,  was loping along right at the front instead of coming up near the rear. Proud as punch. He looked so beautiful even with his furry coat and a body that is, like mine, starting to show some signs of age. It was particularly wonderful because on Sunday I had let one of my grandsons, 6 year old Davan, ride him and George, having never liked anyone but me to be on his back, (and not having been ridden for a few years) was a bit tense and worked himself harder than he needed to. Just walking and jogging but because he was so tense I was worried he would be stiff and sore afterward.

I think he is actually quite proud that he is working again. He is even demanding more respect from some of his herd buddies. Whatever is going on with him is certainly making him happy. And me too. I really love the old boy. He was my saddle horse from the time he was 2 until he was about 18.  He and I checked a lot of cows and had a lot of good times together. I could ride him anywhere on the ranch without a bridle and saddle. I would love for him to teach my grandson what a really great horse feels like to ride.

Now off to see what wonderful things are going to happen today.
