June Free Draw
This draw is complete. Please make sure you enter our newest draw instead of this one. Feel free to leave comments if you have something to say with regards to the question asked in this draw.
Would you like a DVD of the 2008 Trainer’s Challenge at the Mane Event in Red Deer. I was one of the lucky ones who got to be at the Mane Event and it was a very interesting challenge. I think most all of us could pick up some tips here.
June is such a lovely month. The grass is green. The babies are romping in the pastures. The mosquitoes are out. Or rather the damn mosquitoes are out. So let’s make this month’s question:
Do you vaccinate for West Nile?
Just comment by clicking on the comment button at the bottom of this post and telling us your West Nile Vaccination decision and you will be entered in the draw.
June 5th, 2008 Lynn

I have the vaccines and plan to this weekend. I also will start smudging them in the evenings when the pesky little mosqs become active. I have found that if the horses have available areas with no vegitation such as corrals near the buildings they also find some relief. Have yet to try fly sheets. Just do what I can.
Yep - I do the west nile vaccine. I figure it is way cheaper to vacinnate then to try and treat the problem later. And there have been cases of west nile not far from where we are located. Not in horses - but human cases. And the result’s are devastating.
Yes I do. You can never be to sure what can come around. These days horses are being shipped everywhere which makes it very easy for them to bring it along. You can never be to safe!
Yes I vaccinate every year & have ever since the vaccine was available. I also was looking at fly preditors on goodbugs web site & they are coming out with a mosquito preditor soon!!
You bet!!
No I do not vacinnate for West Nile. I never have and my horses don’t leave the property. In my discussions I have not found very many people that do vacinate.
Yes - I feel that it is better to be vaccinating then attempting to treat problems later. It is far more costly as well as devastating to have your horse come ill from something that is preventable.
With 46 reported cases of west nile in horses in 2007 you bet I vaccinate.
Symptoms in those horses that do become sick can include listlessness, a change in demeanor, drooping lips, muscle twitching, a lack of co-ordination, weakness in the limbs, partial paralysis or an inability to get up. A fever is not always present.
Scarry……………………
No, I don’t.
I don’t know much about the West Nile vaccine so I haven’t used it. I would like to know more though - I’ve heard bad things about it too.
Always…
I have already given mine and believe in an ounce of prevention.
Yes, I vaccinate for West Nile. I would feel terrible if I lost my horses to the West Nile virus when there is a vaccine for it. I realize it is costly but so are good horses.
Yes, I vaccinated for West Nile. We have more documented cases of West Nile than any other province (people & horses).
It is getting very expensive to vaccinate our horses for everything, but WNV & Anthrax, 4Way a must with the mosquito population the way it is going to be this summer. We have too much standing water. Thanks for the opportunity to win this DVD.
Yes, we make sure it is done every year to all our equine friends on the farm. Especially after all the rain we have been getting lately.
Yes we do. Already gave 9yr mare hers and my 2yrs old who has never seen a needle before who took it better then the 9yr old who has had it for as long as I have had her(2.5yrs) who always makes it a 2 man job to give her anything weather it be a needle or a wormer, but they both now have it only have to give the 2yr old her booster next month and then everyone is done for the year. Hope every has a eventful spring with the rain and the bugs.
Yes, I do vaccinate my horses with West Nile. This year I switch to the Preve Nile product because it doesn’t require a booster.
Yes, we vaccinate for West Nile.
There have been cases in our area so a person would be taking a huge chance if they didn’t.
no we dont vacinate for west nile theres never been a case in the area where we live, but if a case is ever reported we sure will , we vacinate for everything else though.
Yes, we vaccinate our horses for West Nile, it is a combination vaccination with sleeping sickness and tetanus. Also vaccinate for Flu and Rhino.
Yes, I will be vaccinating for West Nile. I have a friend that lost a horse to West Nile and it was very tramatic for her kids to see. Unfortunately, it was the kids horse so they wanted to be with him. It wasn’t a pretty sight while they waited for the results to come back. Of course they had him put down.
Because I wouldn’t want my kids to experience that, or myself, I will be vaccinating.
YES definately!! We have had some cases in our area in the past here and I fellow I used to ride with had to put his sons horse down because he got west nile and didn’t vaccinate for it!
Yes, we always vaccinate for west nile. When you are competing, training and raising colts, it is not only good business sense to keep up on all the vaccines; but it is also wise to take care of these horses that you emotionally invest yourself in.
Yes, I vaccinate for west nile and have since the vaccine has been available. We travel a lot with our horses and would rather be safe than sorry.
Yes, we vaccinate all of our horses every year for West Nile. The cost of the shot is definetly worth the piece of mind you get knowing that your horse is safe (or at least safer) from West Nile. We have had a few cases in our area and feel that it is well worth it.
I vaccinate all my horses, I wish there was a vaccine for people, I worry about my kids.
Yes i vaccinate for west nile. When look out and see my horses running to keep the Mosquitos off of them, and look at their welted necks, i feel it is the least i can do to protect them.
Yes I vaccinate for WNV every year. Don’t want to take a chance…although luckily so far we haven’t had any Mozzies yet! maybe after all this rain!!
Yes, I vaccinate for West Nile every year. I use the four-way Fort Dodge (West nile, WEE,EEE, Tetanus)so there is one shot, though I sometimes question the logistics of immune challenge, having all the vaccines together at once, though I have never had a horse with symptoms of any of the vaccinated diseases. In addition to the vaccines I take extra precautions such as mosquito population reduction through regularly emptying all sources of stagnant water (plant pots, etc), cleaning auto waterers and animal water dishes every three days, using Vectobac in the ornamental pond, increasing drainage of areas that collect water or putting Vectobac in them if they are around more than a few days. I also spray all the equines with resmethrin-based product on a regular basis. I have thought of looking into neck tags impregnated with repellent but have not had the opportunity just yet.
The horses may be protected by vaccine but I an d my humans/pets are not, therefore the “Off” is a staple in our home, as well as planting shrubs and perennials that supposedly discourage mosquitoes (i.e. citronella). Yes, I look tacky in my mesh mosquito suit on the trail, but it works and that is what matters.
Even in a dry year a good wind can carry hundreds of already infected mosquitoes many miles, so even if your property doesn’t seem to support mosquitoes, vigilance is important.
Yes, we vaccinate for west nile. We travel to Gymkhanas and other horse events throughout the summer so I would rather be safe than sorry.
Yes, we vaccinate for West Nile every year and have done so since the vaccine became available. West Nile is here and I want my herd protected to the best of my ability.
no i dont anymore, there has been no cases originating in b.c..
i dont travel out of my local area and or take my horses to large gatherings around here either..if it does get to be an issue i would
use a one dose vaccine now availible
Yes I vaccinate for WNV - especially my broodmares and babies.
Yes, I vaccinate our show and working horses. I don’t vaccinate the horses 2 and under.
Thanks for the chance to enter your contest.
Yes,I do. It is better to prevent than try to fix it later for a bigger cost.
I haven’t before, but I’m planning to this year. I’m hoping to find some of the PeveNile vaccine, it sounds pretty good.
I vaccinate all horses on our property (even the donkey!) and have since the vaccine came out.
Yes, we vaccinate our horses for west nile. I would much rather not have to worry about it. And they don’t seem to mind.
sure do
no I don’t
Well I am a fairly new horse owner and I am getting mixed reviews about the west nile. I am still deciding on what to do that would be best for my horses. The old type horse owner suggest that it is not necessary and that there have been bad reactions in some cases with their horses. I know that every drug you put in has some effects to the negative. I am leaning towards getting the vacine because I want all the protection for them that I can have. Even my Vet seems to have mixed reviews but in the end I have to bite the bullet and make a decision.
Yes vaccinate the older geldings and stallions. To pricey to vaccine over 100 head.lots of people and horses had it in our neighborhood either you are real sick or you hardly know you have it.Not nice to see your horse suffer with either.Usually have one every year.
Yes I do vaccinate for west nile
Yes I do
No I don’t vaccinate, we have too many horses. I did a few years back for a couple years but anymore:)
No we do not vaccinate. I believe heathly horses should have the immune system to fight it off. I will use homeopathic nosodes for horses that travel alot. As well I keep homeopathics and essentails oils on hand in case of a problem.
Yeah I do, I don’t want to take the risk of not vaccinating
No we don’t vaccinate. I think once they get serious enough to look after humans first then I might consider the livestock etc. Seems to be a huge money grab
You betcha! If there is a vaccine, why not take precautionary measures :).
Yes , we do WNV with the 3 way for all the horses. There have been cases in our area. Mosquitos are every where, so you never know, it just takes one bite!
yes i do, my horses are worth it
No I dont, I have not seen to much good about it so far.
You bet, we have vaccinated everything since the vaccine came available. We have had cases in our area.
YES I vaccinate for west nile because I know of some horses in this area that had it.
No, I take offense to the fact that I can vaccinate my horses but not my kids.
Ya I do
Yep. all 40 head. Can’t afford not to. 8 horses in this area diagnosed with West Nile in 07,
Yes we vaccinate all our horses…..it is expensive but I feel it is important.
Yes!
We started a couple years ago. When you already spend as much money on horses as we do, what’s with a little more insurance for some piece of mind. Besides we already vaccinate for everything else that is ‘going around’ why not west nile?
Yes we do. We farm in irrigation country in south eastern AB. We have plenty of the pesky little mosquitos here! We use the horses for show and ranch and they are to expensive to replace!
We haven’t yet but we are seriously thinking about it. We haven’t (touch wood) had any cases in our immediate area, but all it takes is one and then it is too late.
We only vaccinate the horses we ride so it decreases the chances of us getting injured if the horse gets west nile. It’s way to expensive vaccinate all the horses!
No I don’t.
Yes I do!
Yes I do. My horses are my family.
Hi
we always vaccinate in the middle of May in order to have proper coverage for the summer and fall
Yes I do, and I have every year since the vets here started recommending it. Unlike some, I’ve never personally witnessed any nastiness from the WNV shot. I have, however, seen the disease and it’s nothing to fool around with. As far as I’m concerned, an ounce of prevention and all that, and I’d never forgive myself if I didn’t give the shot and one of mine got the disease!
No
Yes, we do vaccinate against west nile as well.
Yes I do!
