Preparing a Barn Site

Jun 06, 2008 2 Comments by

In preparing your site to build a barn we require your site to be built up 5-7 inches so that you have good drainage. Then start with adding the gravel, pit run is what we use. Build up and compact it with a vibrating compacter in 2″ increments to 98% compaction. No cement required.

When using pit run gravel in your barn… what is it screened at 3/4″? What binds the rock to form and maintain a solid surface?

When I asked a supplier they indicated that I must be wanting base mix road gravel that has clay in it for a binding agent.

What depth of compacted gravel is recommended?

Do you install rubber matting on top?

We call it pit run others call it crusher screenings. What we have used here is screened at about 1/2″ or less and is mixed with sand so it binds up very nicely. We like to see a site built up 5-7 inches depending on your land of course so that you have good drainage.
The site needs to be 6′ larger on all sides for a nice firm base.
You can put rubber mats on top for sure. I still don’t have them in my barn, but it is very easy to clean if you use some shavings.
