NSBA Licensing Program
What is the Licensing Program?
NSBA has introduced the new Stallion Incentive Fund Licensing program for horses of all ages. All licensed horses, are eligible to earn money for NSBA points earned in Dual Approved classes. Payout for the Dual Approved points will be based on the purse of the donated and sold Stallion Incentive Fund sires for the current year. On a study of the past two years, NSBA points would be valued at around $80 per point. The Stallion Nominator will receive 10% of the earnings of offspring in the Dual Approved payout. The Foal Nominator will receive 10% of the earnings of the foal in Dual Approved payout. The owner at the time of competition will receive 80% of the earnings in Dual Approved payout.
How do I know if my horse is eligible to be licensed?
To be licensed a horse must be sired by a stallion that sold in the NSBA Stallion Incentive Fund the year the licensed horse foaled. Eligible sires from 1991-2007 are listed on the NSBA website, nsba.com, under Stallion Incentive Fund, Licensing. Eligible stallions before this date may be checked by calling the NSBA office at 847-623-6722.
How do I license my horse?
To license a horse, the Stallion Incentive Fund Licensing Form must be completed and submitted with the appropriate fees and a copy of the horse’s registration papers, directly to the NSBA office by mail or FAX. Forms are available on line at nsba.com or through the NSBA office.
Can I license my horse at a horse show?
YES! Licensing forms will be available at many of the horse shows or available on line, however, these should be faxed or mailed directly to the NSBA office at 847-625-7435, NOT given to show management. The license is effective the day that it is received at the NSBA office. It is the responsibility of the sender to confirm receipt of a FAX by NSBA.
How much does it cost?
The Incentive Fund License fee is $100 for foals as of 12/15 of their weanling year and $200 for foals after 12/15 of their weanling year until 12/31 of their yearling year. Horses foaled in 2008 and after must be licensed by 12/31 of their yearling year to be eligible for participation in the Stallion Incentive Fund programs. Horses foaled between 1985 and 2007 are eligible for licensing for a $200 fee, until 2011.
Does my horse need to be licensed to show in NSBA Dual- Approved classes or futurities?
NO! To show in NSBA programs, both the owner and exhibitor need to be NSBA members. The horse does not need to be licensed. The license provides the eligibility to earn money for any NSBA dual approved points that are earned but is not needed to be eligible to show in these classes except as noted below.
What if my horse is not sired by an eligible stallion? Can I still License it?
YES! Any stallion not enrolled and sold in the SIF Program prior to 2008, may, for a fee of $600 per foaling year, enroll into the program, making offspring from each year enrolled eligible for SIF classes and licensing. A Grandfather Clause Stallion Nomination Form may be obtained on the NSBA website or from the NSBA office. If a stallion owner decides not to pay a grandfather fee, they can sign a waiver allowing someone else (usually the owner of a foal who wants to license) to grandfather the sire. The waiver form may be obtained from the NSBA office.
Does my horse need to be licensed to show in the SIF classes?
YES! A set of NSBA SIF classes are offered at shows regionally throughout the United States beginning in July. To be eligible to compete in the SIF classes all horses must show an Incentive Fund License. Only licensed horses sired by a sold stallion in the competition year are eligible. NOTE: If the sire of the horse to be shown in the SIF class is being “grandfathered” for the foaling year, the Grandfather Clause Stallion Nomination form must be submitted by May 15th of the competition year. The SIF classes available are: Two-Year-Old Open Western Pleasure $1000 added, Three-Year-Old Non-Pro Western Pleasure $500 added, and Three-Year-Old Open Hunter Under Saddle $1000 added. The shows offering these classes are listed beginning in the June issue of The Way To Go and also on www.nsba.com. The entry fee is $75 payable on the day of the show. Both the owner and exhibitor must be current members, no show passes are allowed.
