Input Sought for Kananaskis Parks
Albertans have another opportunity to help shape the future of the 51 existing provincial recreation areas, as well as Bragg Creek Provincial Park, in Kananaskis Country. Facility additions or expansions, new recreation sites and changed park classifications are among the types of proposals contained in the draft management plans that are now ready for public review and comment.
Last November, stakeholders and the public provided input on the draft terms of reference for two management plans, one for the provincial recreation areas and one for the provincial park. The input was gathered at two open houses and through written comments. The final terms of reference can be viewed at www.tpr.alberta.ca/parks/kcpra/
This input has been incorporated into the draft management plans, which are intended to establish goals and objectives on how to support recreational activities, while
continuing to preserve the existing park areas.
Copies of the draft management plans can be downloaded at www.tpr.alberta.ca/parks/kcpra/
Hard copies can also be requested by calling 310-0000 toll free, then dialing 403-678-5508. Input can be submitted online, by e-mail or by mail. Details on how to submit feedback via these three channels are available on the website listed above. The deadline for submissions is September 30.
Provincial recreation areas are generally small land areas in the immediate vicinity of camping or day use facilities. Together with the associated designated trails system, these recreation areas provide significant outdoor opportunities for the Calgary region. Most of the provincial recreation areas were established in the 1980s as part of the development of Kananaskis Country. Bragg Creek Provincial Park, which was established in 1960, provides recreation and learning opportunities near the hamlet of Bragg Creek.
