Working Mountain Horse Competition & Sale

If I didn’t already have a committment for today, I can tell you what I would be doing. I would be going to the Working Mountain Horse Competition. The Wild Deuce Girls ride out in the west country all summer and then bring their horses who have a summer full of experience to the competition and sale. Actually folks can bring their own horses and compete in the Friday competition. There is another whole competition on Saturday for just horses that are going in the sale. Then the sale on Sunday. There is a BBQ, Wild Steer Packing competition, Tradeshow, STARS Silent Auction, Round Pen demo and much more. You can even camp at the location and stay and enjoy the whole weekend. Check out their listing on the horse sales for more info and the listing of the horses in the sale.

Are you seeing the Pot O’ Gold Ad?

How many of you are getting to see the Pot O Gold ad (animation) on the right hand side of the Northernhorse.com home page right above the classified feed? Or… are you seeing a request to download the flash player? Or… something else? Would appreciate your input so we can see how big a problem we have. Thanks, Lynn

Gem Twist Reborn

The latest cloning news comes from the European cloning firm Cryozootech, who have today announced the birth of a clone of the three-time “American Grand Prix Association Horse of the Year”, legendary American Thoroughbred gelding showjumper “Gem Twist”.

Gem Twist – owned and bred by Frank and Mary Chapot – was much loved by followers of the sport of showjumping for an entire generation, winning two Silver Medals at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games under Greg Best, as well as Team Silver at the Pan-American Games, and numerous other Grand Prix. In 1990 he was named the “World’s Best Horse” at the World Equestrian Games in Stockholm.

The only real “downside” To Gem Twist was that he was a gelding – and therefore unable to pass on his excellent genetic material to please future generation of showjumping fans – but now, with this clone, he can!

Thanks to the Equine-Reproduction.com site for this news.

Hurricane Ike

With fall on our doorstep and the weatherman even talking about snow flurries in a few days I have been doing my annual “Why do I live in this place where it is so cold in the winter?” routine.

But, although I do really love to get away to somewhere warm in the winter for a visit, I am truly grateful today that this photo isn’t of my home even if it is in a place that stays warm year round. I feel so sorry for those who lost their homes and those who have to clean all that mess.

Maybe if I look at a few more photos from the hurricane, I will be looking forward to bundling up in heavy clothes and shovelling snow – or maybe not.

Misty

Jenny Faulkner sent us this story of a horse who stole her heart.

Misty was a horse I bought at the spur of the moment. I was going to take home her half sister, whom I had chosen to buy before hand. The seller said she would make me a deal on the 2 and being the horse crazy child I was, i couldnt say no. There I was at the age of 13, with 2 weanling QH fillies. Continue Reading »

September 2008 Free Draw

This draw has been completed. Please don’t enter here but go to the current draw instead.

For the September draw we are giving away a copy of Robert Vavra’s book Equus, the creation of a horse. It is a used copy and the outside paper cover has a bit of damage but the book itself is in great shape. I have a copy of this book myself and really like it not only for the photos but also for the Author’s note on the photos and comments on the social behavior of horses. This month’s question is: “Did you or are you planning to take a lesson or clinic in 2008?
