Xxterra Cream (Indian Mud), just tried it on a sarcoid. It shrivelled up and is gone in 4 days. Will have to wait and see if it comes back or not – but seems to work good! Expensive but still much better than having it cut out and frozen, which is what we have done in the past.
The wound spray mixture with the Melaleuca Oil in it.
Have used it on some pretty nasty looking wounds and they all healed up really nicely with very little scarring and no proud flesh.
Does everybody know about mineral oil already? Plain old mineral oil you get at the drugstore, for keeping wounds moist and keeping flies out. As long as the wound is not infected a coating of mineral oil twice a day will keep the flies away and the edges of the wound soft enough to heal with very little scaring. I used this on a barb wire cut last summer on a little quarterhorse mare(above and below her eye)added bonus it doesn’t sting.
Olive oil works well too (as does the mineral oil as mentioned above). In,on and around wounds keeping them moist enough to heal without scaring. Seems to repel flies as well.
Use baby butt cream around a wound to prevent scalding from the weeping that occurs.
The Melaleuca spray is the best as you can get it in and on the sore without having to touch the animal and it keeps the flies and other insects off of it. You have to use it about 3 times a day but what the heck if it works – right
We have experienced cases of diarrhea with some of our newborn foals especially during the mares heat cycles. We have found that if you mix pepto bismol and plain white yogurt together and give the foal around 20cc it seems to help clear up very quickly.
For injuries on the hoof or the bulbs of the foot, a great dressing (and inexpensive) are newborn baby diapers. You duct tape them around the wound and so form a barrier that will absorb moisture. Just be sure to change it frequently and wound dust or borofoam will help keep things nice inside.
