Natural Supplements for Horses
Dr. Wendy Pearson, author of more than 20 scientific peer-reviewed research papers and speaker at events in the UK, UAE, China, Ireland, Australia, Netherlands, Italy, Botswana, USA and Canada, is one of the 17 international presenters on the agenda at the 28th annual Horse Breeders and Owners Conference (HBOC) being held in Red Deer on January 15 to 17, 2010. Her presentation is titled Natural Supplements for the Performance Horse – Sorting the Chalk from the Cheese.
.
Pearson, a post-doctoral research fellow, is doing research on medicinal herbs as anti-inflammatory agents in horses at the University of Guelph. Her research has focused on equine natural products, and she has a Masters in nutritional toxicology and a PhD in Biomedical Toxicology, both from the University of Guelph.
“Dr. Pearson will be discussing the benefits of botanicals as medicine for things such as increased immune function in horses, managing heaves in horses, managing arthritis with herbs and herbs for treating chronic allergic skin diseases,” says Teresa van Bryce, manager of Horse Industry Association of Alberta. “She will be providing examples of herbal benefits, but also discussing that natural is not completely synonymous with safe, maintaining that the key to maximizing the benefit of botanicals for horses is to encourage continued efforts in science to conduct horse-specific research on potentially important plants and plant mixtures.”
The 2010 HBOC is packed with presentations on horse health, training, nutrition, breeding, horsemanship and horse industry business concerns. In addition to being a unique opportunity to listen to and learn from a full slate of world renowned horsemen and horsewomen, event sponsors will be on-hand during the weekend to exhibit and talk about their equine products and services.
Conference pre-registration is $95 per person and cost for additional individuals registered at the same time from the same farm is $80. Registration at the door will be $95 per person. Registration includes a copy of the conference proceedings.
