Weather

There was no diving today for us. Weather. So I spent a little time checking out what the locals thought was happening with the weather.

Jamaica is famous for its good weather apparently. According to the resort manager this last month has been the worst for him in 20 years because of the rain. There are lots of kids here and many of the parents get pretty stressed when locked in their rooms with their little darlings. So according to him this has been a particularly bad weather spell. Working From Jamaica

One of the blessings (and curses some would think) of working on the web is you can work almost everywhere. Even in Jamaica. So my office today overlooks the beautiful Caribbean Sea. The air is warm and moist. My dried out skin is already plumping up, my hair is a ball of frizz. I swam in the warm salt water this morning but had to quit sooner than I wanted as it seems like only minutes before our sun starved bodies turn pink. Continue Reading »

Charges Laid In Wild Horse Shooting

Wild Horses West of Sundre

Wild Horses West of Sundre

Alberta RCMP have laid charges in one of a series of wild horse killings near Sundre.

Jason Nixon, 29, Earl Anderson, 40 and a 13 year old boy have been charged so far with at least one more charge pending. They will appear in court March 1st in Didsbury, AB.

Mustard Seed, a well known Calgary social agency, has confirmed in a statement that the two men are associated with its Mountain Aire Lodge near Sundre.

There has been an ongoing investigation for the past 3 years into the case. Hopefully more charges will be laid soon in the other horse killings.

“This has been ongoing for a long, long time,” said spokesman for WHOAS,  Bob Henderson.

“Since our group has been formed, there has been over 30 killings or around 30 killings that we know about, and it’s also gone on long before that. So whether they’ve caught everybody, I don’t think so, but at least there’s some progress being made,” he said.

Nixon has also been charged with assault, uttering threats, and obstructing a Fish and Wildlife officer who was investigating the incident.

Our Loss – Topsail Whiz

TopsailwhizThe reining world lost one of its own when the great Topsail Whiz had to be humanely put down on Dec. 23, after complications from surgery to repair damaged vertebrae in his spine. The sport’s first and only Six Million Dollar Sire transformed the industry and helped to define the modern reining horse.

Owner/breeder and Hall of Famer Bob Loomis said of his Hall of Fame stallion: “He wasn’t just any horse; he was a member of the family. There will never be another one like him.” Continue Reading »

AQHA Qualifying Points

The qualifying season for the 2010 Bank of America Amateur and FedEx Open World Championship Show is under way, and the recommendations for qualifying points have been approved by the American Quarter Horse Association Executive Committee.

AQHA’s in-house World Show Committee uses a formula to determine the qualifying points that includes information on entries for the previous World Show. The committee then presents the recommendations to the Executive Committee for approval.
Qualifying points for the 2010 AQHA World Show will remain the same as in 2009, with the exception of progressive working hunter. For 2010, the progressive working hunter class will require four points to qualify to compete at the World Show compared to the six points needed for 2009. The qualifying period for the 2010 AQHA World Show began August 1, 2009, and will conclude July 31, 2010. To check your current points, visit www.aqhamembers.org. Continue Reading »

Free Draw for Ben Crane Print

Mad_Cow_Disease

DO NOT ENTER THIS DRAW. IT IS OVER. Check for a new draw posted on the front of Northernhorse.com.

Some of our horse people are also cattle producers. For some who like to have those nice big calves in the fall calving season is about to begin. We used to calve cows and more than once have found ourselves in a similar predicament to the folks in the Ben Crane print “Mad Cow Disease”. Amazing how fast those old girls can get that shit covered tail winging around. And how their eyes bulge out. And how much help the calve that you were trying to save was as he was fighting to get off the sleigh and making frantic little bawls to fire up Mama even more.

The prize for this draw is a signed print by Ben Crane called  “Mad Cow Disease.

How do you enter? Just post a comment below with the answer to our question.

The question? Are you on Facebook? Have you became a fan of Northernhorse.com on facebook?

This draw will end mid February.

Good luck everyone.
