Foal Chewing Wound
Diane was kind enough to get back to us and thank everyone for their suggestions.
Lynn – thanks for putting my request on the website. Many useful suggestions. We
are using Cut Heal spray – he doesn’t like the taste of it – with hydrotherapy twice a
day. We have made an apron with legs (out of blue jeans) that we put on after washing.
It is heauy enough for now to be working. Again thank everyone for their help.

I need help with a month old foal that got cut up in barbed wire a few days ago. It is across the chest & shoulder, the vet sewed it up, but it has broke open. He wants to chew at himself. We put on old shirt on him to cover it & keep clean. Hydrotherapy & spray are helping. How can we stop him from chewing ??? Help

Make a bib for him with an old cowboy boot top and attach it to the rings on his halter. Will allow full access for nursing but not allow his teeth to reach the wound. Worked for me many times over the years.,!!
I use Cutheal on all my wounds, it works great and tastes so bad no horse has ever chewed themself.
try an cribbing collar…..or rig one up that will fit him
Ed Wedman sent us this.
I had a yearling a few years back that did exactly that. I’d make sure the foal is halter broke then put a belt around its girth snug, so it cannot slide back. Then while standing measure from center of side rib to halter ring take1/2 or ¾” PVC pipe and put a snap on each end, you can do this by running a rope through the pipe . JUST on one side this allows the foal to eat and nurse. Watch closely for awhile it will learn quickly.
My foal ware it for 3 mo. He healed 100%

I had a horse get hurt really bad and she was doing the same thing. I put Watkins salve (the red tin) on it and she left it alone!! – From Michelle
I think the first response with the top of a boot sounds ingenious!! what a great idea! pratical and yes not too intrusive.
We have had this issue in the past, and we have used Derma Gel. It works great on all kinds of wounds and the horses don’t like the taste so they won’t chew on it. They heal really well and usually with little to no scaring.
