Camping Spot Needed near WEG in Kentucky

One of our journalists/photographers and her husband is in need of a place to park their truck & camper that would be close to the grounds  at the Kentucky Horse Park for the World Equestrian Games. Their camper unit is self contained – they don’t need any hookups or power. They will be attending the WEG event during the day and sleeping in the camper at night. Nice quiet folks. They won’t be partying or making a lot of noise. Willing to pay a reasonable fee.

They would really like to be able to bicycle to and from the event so within a few miles of the Kentucky Horse Park would be nice.  They would like to be there the first week of October. We can supply references.

Please let us know if you know of any campgrounds with spaces available or if you know of a little spot that someone would rent for the week. You can email lynn@northernhorse.com if you have a spot that could work.

Another Dispersal of Great Cutting Horses

The performance horse industry is set for yet another offering of outstanding cutting horses. Stan Thomas, owner of Three Trees Ranch Inc., Newnan, Ga., is dispersing of his horses in a sale on Friday, Oct. 15. The auction is managed by Troy Stewart and it’s being held at EE Ranches in Whitesboro, Texas, starting at 9:30 a.m.

Thomas, a real estate developer, was a regular at the National Cutting Horse Association sales a few years back. He purchased a number of high-profile horses, including the high-selling yearlings in 2004 (Catalaney, $300,000), 2006 (Imirage and Ruby Reyn, $285,000 each) and 2007 (Curlys Cowgirl, $500,000). According to Stewart, Thomas is selling approximately 50 horses in the October sale, and EE Ranches also has some consigned. There will be 65-70 horses sold in all.

“This is the best set of horses, pedigree wise, that I’ve ever seen at a sale,” Stewart said.

Tornado in West Country near Sundre

When my friend Bob Henderson sent me some info about the wild horses the other day, he included some photos of what appears to be a tornado in one of the areas where he monitors the wildies. He says:

Also when I was out there I came a cross a valley where the Sundre Tornado had obviously touched down.  It was on the North James and we had taken you there.  The path of destruction of this tornado was1/2 mile wide by 2 miles long.  There was not a tree left standing and they were twisted in all directions and even big trees were snapped off like twigs.  I have attached a couple of pictures. There were two small herds of wild horses in this vallley and I pray that they and all other creatures made it to safety.

Thanks Bob for the pictures. Bob has lots of nice photos on the Wild Horse Site. He even has some for sale if you want a nice image for a gift or your own wall or site.

Great Cutting Sire CD Olena Passes Away

The cutting world suffered a terrible blow on Friday when the legendary CD Olena died suddenly at the Texas ranch where he was standing. According to Dr. David Hartman, who was leasing and standing CD Olena, the 19-year-old stallion died suddenly on Friday morning. It appeared as though he did not struggle and passed away peacefully. A post-mortem examination was conducted by noted pathologist Dr. Fairfield Bain of Equine Sports Medicine and Surgery.

“It revealed that he died of a ruptured aorta at the base of the heart,” Hartman said. “It’s an age-related change and a number of stallions have died of this. It was very, very sudden and there was nothing anyone could do for him.”

CD Olena was by Doc O’Lena and out of CD Chica San Badger by Peppy San Badger. It was a young trainer by the name of Winston Hansma who talked Bobby Pidgeon, owner of Bar H Ranche in Texas, into making that particular match.
