Camping Spot Needed near WEG in Kentucky

One of our journalists/photographers and her husband is in need of a place to park their truck & camper that would be close to the grounds  at the Kentucky Horse Park for the World Equestrian Games. Their camper unit is self contained – they don’t need any hookups or power. They will be attending the WEG event during the day and sleeping in the camper at night. Nice quiet folks. They won’t be partying or making a lot of noise. Willing to pay a reasonable fee.

They would really like to be able to bicycle to and from the event so within a few miles of the Kentucky Horse Park would be nice.  They would like to be there the first week of October. We can supply references.

Please let us know if you know of any campgrounds with spaces available or if you know of a little spot that someone would rent for the week. You can email lynn@northernhorse.com if you have a spot that could work.

Another Dispersal of Great Cutting Horses

The performance horse industry is set for yet another offering of outstanding cutting horses. Stan Thomas, owner of Three Trees Ranch Inc., Newnan, Ga., is dispersing of his horses in a sale on Friday, Oct. 15. The auction is managed by Troy Stewart and it’s being held at EE Ranches in Whitesboro, Texas, starting at 9:30 a.m.

Thomas, a real estate developer, was a regular at the National Cutting Horse Association sales a few years back. He purchased a number of high-profile horses, including the high-selling yearlings in 2004 (Catalaney, $300,000), 2006 (Imirage and Ruby Reyn, $285,000 each) and 2007 (Curlys Cowgirl, $500,000). According to Stewart, Thomas is selling approximately 50 horses in the October sale, and EE Ranches also has some consigned. There will be 65-70 horses sold in all.

“This is the best set of horses, pedigree wise, that I’ve ever seen at a sale,” Stewart said.

Farnam All-Around Amateur Award

There seems to be more and more interest in more all around type horses and horse events. I really enjoyed the Cowboy-Up Challenge at the Calgary Stampede – that was a pretty demanding test for the all around horse. Some of them could spin well enough to be good reining horses. I’m sure many of them could hold their own in various individual events.  But the thing that was most interesting was the trust that some of the riders had developed with their horses to enable them to overcome their instinctive need to keep themselves safe and to just do what the rider asked, trusting that this was a better decision than it appeared to be from the horse’s perspective in most cases.

We received the following information about the Farnam All-around Amateur Award from the AQHA:

The Farnam All-Around Amateur Award goes to the top Select amateur exhibitor-and-horse team earning the most points in three or more events in two categories during the Adequan Select World Show. The winner of this award receives $10,000 cash, plus $1,000 of Farnam product and a WeatherBeeta blanket; the reserve all-around amateur receives $2,500 cash, plus $500 of Farnam product; and the third- through fifth-place finishers each receive $1,000 cash and $250 of Farnam product. Calgary Stampede Cowboy Up Challenge

The Calgary Stampede Cowboy Up Challenge is a multi-faceted equestrian sporting event that showcases both horse and rider as they maneuver through a series of obstacles demonstrating both their amazing horsemanship skills and incredible speed. That was printed on the paper we were given as an introduction to the participants in this, the first challenge of it’s kind in Canada.

From a 59 year old woman to a stunt rider, from Pennsylvania and California to just outside Calgary, from Andulsian to Mustang it was a mixed group of people and horses all with the goal of showing the most skill and being the fastest through an array of obstacles. Continue Reading »

Wild Pink Yonder Ride for Cancer

We thought it time to remind everybody that it’s a scant 55 days away from our start date, so if you’re one of those procrastinators, now’s the time to get that registration in.

As you will see on the map (http://maps.google.ca/maps/ms?client=firefox-a&hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=114259023932745719916.00047723215f689fa2cae&z=7) everything is set.

Just the other day CFCW signed on as a sponsor, so with that, the ride into Camrose (or “Campink” as Jackie Rae called it during our meeting) ought to be interesting. Jackie Rae plans to meet with the Campink Chamber of Commerce this week coming up. (From what I’ve been told, Campink has already done their “Welcome to Camrose” flower bed as a huge pink breast cancer ribbon! Very cool.) Continue Reading »
