How Two Horses Plotted History

I read this somewhere previously but a friend sent me it the other day and I thought maybe some of you would enjoy it.

The US standard railroad gauge (distance between the rails) is 4 feet, 8.5 inches. That’s an exceedingly odd number. Why was that gauge used? Because that’s the way they built them in England, and English expatriates designed the US railroads. Continue Reading »

Your Aawh for Today

A giant farm dog and a tiny piglet cuddle up as if they were family after the baby runt was dismissed by its own mother. Surrogate mum Katjinga, an eight-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback, took on motherly duties for grunter Paulinchen – a tiny pot-bellied pig – and seems to be taking the adoption in her stride.

Lonely Paulinchen was luckily discovered moments from death and placed in the care of the dog who gladly accepted it as one of her own. Thankfully for the two-week old mini porker, Katjinga fell in love with him at first sight and saved his bacon. Continue Reading »

All In Perspective

One day , the father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the express purpose of showing him how poor people live.
They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family.
On their return from their trip , the father asked his son , “How was the trip?”
“It was great , Dad.”
“Did you see how poor people live?” the father asked.
“Oh yeah , ” said the son.
“So , tell me , what did you learn from the trip?” asked the father.
The son answered:
“I saw that we have one dog and they had four.
We have a pool  that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end.
We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night.
Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon.
We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight.
We have servants who serve us , but they serve others.
We buy our food , but they grow theirs.
We have walls around our property to protect us , they have friends to protect them.”
The boy’s father was speechless.
Then his son added ,   “Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are.”
Isn’t perspective a wonderful thing? Makes you wonder what would happen if we all gave thanks for everything we have, instead of worrying about what we don’t have.
Appreciate every single thing you have , especially your friends!
Pass this on to friends and acquaintances and help them refresh their perspective and appreciation.
“Life is too short and friends are too few.”

Equine Rolex Commercial

Horses are a common theme in advertising. They can indicate strength, speed, beauty and bring out stirring emotions in many of us. I see the Rolex people have now done an equine commercial for their high end products.

Some Interesting Stats

This isn’t about horses but I found some of these statistics interesting. Having worked on the web since it first hit town, I think I am quite accustomed to change but sometimes it is quite shocking to see how fast it really is happening. I was cleaning out the garage yesterday and found a book about the early web that brought back memories of gopher and mailing lists and Archie and Veronica – all stuff that seemed so excitingly new at the time but that would seem terribly awkward now. We have come a long way in a short time on the web and in lots of other technologies in our fast changing world.

The Cowboy & The Yuppie

A cowboy named Bud was overseeing his herd in a remote mountainous pasture in Alberta, when suddenly a brand-new BMW advanced toward him out of a cloud of dust.

The driver, a young man in a Brioni suit, Gucci shoes, RayBan sunglasses and YSL tie, leaned out the window and asked the cowboy, “If I tell you exactly how many cows and calves you have in your herd, will you give me a calf?”

Bud looks at the man, obviously a yuppie, then looks at his peacefully grazing herd and calmly answers, “Sure, why not? Continue Reading »
