Keeper and the Chiropractor

Today we took Keeper to a Chiropractor. Keeper has been taking it easy for about 6 weeks or so since the trip to the mountains where our attempt to put 2 pairs of horses together went wrong and she hurt something. At first I hoped it was just a bruised sole or perhaps an abscess as there were lots of opportunities to bruise something on the stumps and roots and rocks and trees – not that she had to use that stage to demonstrate her eligibility to be on “So You Think You Can Dance”. International Reining Competition Comes to Chilliwack

Big-name reiners, vying for spots on Canada’s team at this year’s World Equestrian Games, will converge on Chilliwack July 16-18, giving local enthusiasts a rare opportunity to see the best that Canada has to offer in this fast-paced sport.

For the first time ever, WEG is being held in North America, giving Canadian reiners an unprecedented opportunity to compete on the world stage with their own horses. Eight riders have qualified for the finals, through a series of competitions held earlier in the year. At those (CRI) competitions, riders needed to earn qualifying scores on any horse. Farmers Solution to the Oil Spill

It has always been my experience that farmers and ranchers are particularly good at finding solutions to problems. They don’t tend to have great gobs of money like the oil companies so they have to find ways to make the things they already have and can afford work. This looks interesting. Some of you who work in the oil fields may have seen straw and hay used for reclamation on land or at least we have sold straw that I think went for that purpose.

68 Year Old Jockey Injured at Remington Park

Jockey Roy Brooks, 68, the oldest jockey to ever ride at Remington Park and second-oldest active jockey in North America, was injured Saturday night prior to the fifth race of the evening.

White Legged Cowboy flopped over to his side just before loading into the starting gate to compete in a Graham Paint & Appaloosa Futurity trial. When the 2-year-old Paint fell over, he impacted and rolled over Brooks. Trained by Luis Villafranco, the gelding was subsequently ridden by Jesus Salazar, finishing third.

Remington Park medical staffers immediately came to the aide of the jockey and he was transported to the University of Oklahoma Medical Center in Oklahoma City. Continue Reading »

Trainer’s Challenge Finals Conclude at the Mane Event

Red Deer, AB – Ken McNabb of Wyoming took home the championship trophy at this year’s Trainer’s Challenge finals at Westerner Park in Red Deer.

“The Trainer’s Challenge is such a great opportunity for us to come together and learn from each other,” he said after receiving his trophy from Diane Anderson of Tymarc Art Studio. “It’s not about winning or losing, because when we can learn together we really all become winners.”

McNabb’s positive and encouraging attitude was evident throughout the weekend, and he kept this same mindset in the finals. “We’re on a time clock during the finals, but a horse doesn’t understand what that means,” he said during his ride. “So, you really have to take your time and hurry slowly. I’ve also got to make sure that I’m giving him as much as he’s giving me. Continue Reading »

Farm Animal Care Takes Center Stage

Livestock producers in Alberta and across Canada are part of a global evolution in farm animal care. It is emerging front and centre in everything from retail standards and world trade agreements to verified on-farm management approaches. The good news for Alberta’s livestock producers is they are helping lead progress to succeed in this environment.

This was the picture drawn by speakers at the Livestock Care Conference, March 26 in Red Deer, hosted by Alberta Farm Animal Care (AFAC). The conference drew a record attendance of more than 180 livestock producers, industry representatives, academics, researchers and students. Continue Reading »
