2009 NCHA Futurity Sale

The Actual Average for the Western Bloodstock’s 10th Annual NCHA Futurity Sale on December 8 thru 13, 2009 at $13,260 was only down slightly from the 2008 average of $13,688 . The fact that this year’s average is still the 2nd lowest average of the past 10 years makes me think  there were still some excellent buying opportunities at this year’s sale.

Out of 974 lots offered, 778 sold. That makes 80% completed sales.

No Unwanted Horses in Canada?

I keep reading articles saying there is a big problem with unwanted horses and not enough homes to adopt them. Most articles even say that this includes not only the sick and unsound but also horses that are perfectly rideable.

Recently we got a wanted ad posted by a horseperson with a very nice home for a rideable horse who is even willing to pay a modest price for the rescued horse. She knows the cost to keep a horse, even has a large property with some other horses (retired and not sound) that she is caring for. She has a budget and doesn’t want to spend so much that she cannot afford to give it the care it needs. The only responses this person gets is for horses that require medicating with expensive meds to keep them comfortable enough to not be put down or for horses in the $4000 to $10,000.  Continue Reading »

Horse Rescue

I received an inquiry today that reads:

“I am looking to rescue a couple of horses from the feedlot buyers.  What type of auction do I need to go to?  I am looking for young horses to ride, training is not important”.

I would suppose that knowing the location of the person making the request would help us make suggestions as I doubt one would have to travel too far to find a couple of horses that need rescuing. Maybe some folks reading this will have some good ideas? I would think most of them end up in the local auction sales? Perhaps there are feedlots that let you go through and pick out ones to buy? Sounds like this is an opportunity for a few youngsters to find a good home. There is a “comment” link below where you can discuss your suggestions. Continue Reading »
