Adorable Babies

A friend sent me these photos. They aren’t doing a thing to help my impatience waiting for my baby to be born. And, if you find these adorable, slip on over to the photo contest for even more. I think this might be our best year yet for baby photos.

Babies Photo Contest

2010 Babies Photo ContestSpring is here. What do we love best in the spring? The babies, of course. This contest isn’t limited to baby horses nor is it limited to this years babies. We love calves, puppies, kittens and pretty well every baby animal we have ever met. So go for it. Take your cameras with you when you head out to the barn or paddock or pasture, catch one of those special moments and upload it to our contest. Whether your photo will make us fall in love or bring a smile to our lips, we are excited to see your baby pictures.

And… you could win a gift card for $50 from Starbucks or Timmys. The winner is decided by who gets the most votes from our visitors. Good luck everyone.

Disturbing or Interesting Image?

Ready or Not Here I Come

Ready or Not Here I Come

The photo currently at the top of Northernhorse.com (March 1, 2010) was the winner (by quite a bit) of the photo contest. Lots of folks really like it as it won by popular vote. Now we have received 2 comments that it feels disturbing like there is something wrong with the horse as in this comment:

I want to comment on the “winner” of the snow photo contest. (”Ready or not…”) I find the image disturbing. The horse looks unnaturally contorted, which makes me assume it’s either is either digitally enhanced or dead.

Now I don’t really think the photo is digitally enhanced nor dead. I do agree it is a very uncommon position for a horse to be in but I don’t even think it is distressed or particularly uncomfortable. I think it is probably about to lay down and roll.

But I find it really interesting that the same photo can bring out a wide range of emotions in people from funny to disturbing.  Feel free to share your comments.

With all this snow it should be pretty easy to get some shots of horses in the snow. I was really impressed with some of the entries to our last competition. There are some great photographers out there. Some with a sense of humour, some with a little different angle, very creative lot. So we are really looking forward to seeing what you will come up with for this competition.

The winner will get a gift card for $50 from Starbucks or Timmys. The winner is decided by who gets the most votes from our visitors. Good luck everyone.

Photo Contest Winner Donates Prize

2009 Summer Photo Contest Winner

2009 Summer Photo Contest Winner

The photographer who took the winning photo in our Summer photo contest, Nola Shannon has told us that she is going to donate her $50.00 Tim Horton’s card that she won in the contest to Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society for their volunteers.  She goes on to say:

The volunteers of the Rescue Crew will be able to use the card for the days they head out on animal rescue missions in central Alberta.  Their focus is to rescue dogs but they have been known to rescue horses and cats.  They are brave souls for doing the work they do and deserve a free meal and coffee.

We applaud her generosity and thank her for making us aware of what sounds like a very special group of people.

2009 Summer Photo Contest

2009SummerPhotoContest

Our 2009 Summertime Photo Contest is Over. We have picked a winner. Please don’t enter or vote on this one. Check for a current one.

Winner is Number 677 Shy Rider by Nola Shannon.

Summertime & the living is easy. Old song, most of you have probably never heard it. And, although we are all concerned about the hay situation with these long warm days and not enough moisture, we certainly have to admit that the riding has never been better. Hardly any mosquitoes and no mud or bogs. You can cross our big slough right now without getting your horse’s feet wet.

So get out there and ride or do whatever it is that you like to do with your horses. I know folks who just like to hang out with their horses and never get on their backs. Now is the time. Continue Reading »

Photo Contest Photo

The new image at the top of Northernhorse.com is from our 2009 Spring Photo Contest Winning photo by Anne Switzer. Anne received a Tim Hortons gift certificate for $50.00 for submitting this photo.

It was difficult to find an image to balance the other side of the photo to use it as the Northernhorse.com header. I ended up just using the same photo flipped horizontally and transformed larger. The face is so interesting that it deserves enlarging.

FoalSpotDollar 335

Thanks Anne for entering our contest and also for sharing a photo of the foal born later to the mare in the photo.  The photo was called “Awaiting Motherhood”

Photo Contest Winner

The winner of our 2009 Spring Photo Contest is #499 – Anne Switzer is the photographer. Thanks to all of you for your entries. There are some really creative photographers in our midst.

I am thinking we are all really ready for summer. I am going to call the next photo contest SUMMERTIME. Other than it has to be horse related, it is up to you what it is about. I am hoping for some lovely photos of some of the places where you enjoy your horses in the summertime.

It seems that a Tim Horton card or Starbucks card makes a popular prize that most everyone can use so $50 card of your choice is the prize.  Even if you don’t drink coffee they both have other choices. We will give you some time to get these summer pictures although you can certainly use ones from other summers. Contest end date will be end of July.
