At the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, it’s all about the teams, the countries they represent and the money that can be won.

To increase reining team participation in the Games, the Federation Equestre Internationale has approved deepening the prize-money payout. This year, the team reining competition will pay a $100,000 purse to 15 places. Countries that haven’t yet met the FEI requirements for a full team can still apply for wild-card status. And none other than Craig Cameron, the famed horseman and Texas-based co-creator of the wildlypopular Extreme Cowboy Race, will be in Calgary from March 19 to 21, 2010 to teach the finer points of this challenging and demanding equestrian sporting event.

The Craig Cameron Extreme Cowboy Race Clinic and Demonstration will be held at the Corral on Stampede Park, with a clinic for registered participants on Friday, March 19 as well as Extreme Cowboy Race exhibitions and practice rounds for public consumption on Saturday, March 20 and Sunday, March 21. Our Loss – Topsail Whiz

TopsailwhizThe reining world lost one of its own when the great Topsail Whiz had to be humanely put down on Dec. 23, after complications from surgery to repair damaged vertebrae in his spine. The sport’s first and only Six Million Dollar Sire transformed the industry and helped to define the modern reining horse.

Owner/breeder and Hall of Famer Bob Loomis said of his Hall of Fame stallion: “He wasn’t just any horse; he was a member of the family. There will never be another one like him.” Continue Reading »

AQHA Qualifying Points

The qualifying season for the 2010 Bank of America Amateur and FedEx Open World Championship Show is under way, and the recommendations for qualifying points have been approved by the American Quarter Horse Association Executive Committee.

AQHA’s in-house World Show Committee uses a formula to determine the qualifying points that includes information on entries for the previous World Show. The committee then presents the recommendations to the Executive Committee for approval.
Qualifying points for the 2010 AQHA World Show will remain the same as in 2009, with the exception of progressive working hunter. For 2010, the progressive working hunter class will require four points to qualify to compete at the World Show compared to the six points needed for 2009. The qualifying period for the 2010 AQHA World Show began August 1, 2009, and will conclude July 31, 2010. To check your current points, visit www.aqhamembers.org. Continue Reading »

Ranch Sorting & Team Penning Rule Changes

The American Quarter Horse Journal, December 21, 2009 – New American Quarter Horse competition rules will be in effect with the New Year. Several rule changes involve team penning and ranch sorting, two of AQHA’s most popular classes.

“At AQHA, nothing is more paramount than ensuring the welfare of the American Quarter Horse during competition,” said Don Treadway Jr., AQHA executive vice president. “For more than 40 years, AQHA’s welfare and competition policies have been set in place to protect the horse, and for the past year we have spent a lot of time reviewing and fine-tuning those policies within AQHA’s own rules and in discussions with all of our alliance partners.” Continue Reading »
