Foal Chewing Wound

Diane was kind enough to get back to us and thank everyone for their suggestions.

Lynn – thanks for putting my request on the website. Many useful suggestions.  We
are using Cut Heal spray – he doesn’t like the taste of it – with hydrotherapy twice a
day.  We have made an apron with legs (out of blue jeans) that we put on after washing.
It is heauy enough for now to be working.  Again thank everyone for their help.

What follows is the original post for help.  Thanks to those who shared their ideas. You can still add your ideas and knowledge to this post. We could even repost it once in awhile or repost the ideas on a permanent page for sure.

We got this call for help this morning. If you have any ideas that might help please share them with us.  You can  post it in the comment section below or email lynn@northernhorse.com.

I need help with a month old foal that got cut up in barbed wire a few days ago.  It is across the chest & shoulder, the vet sewed it up, but it has broke open.  He wants to chew at himself.  We put on old shirt on him to cover it & keep clean.  Hydrotherapy & spray are helping.  How can we stop him from chewing ???   Help

Trainer’s Challenge Finals Conclude at the Mane Event

Red Deer, AB – Ken McNabb of Wyoming took home the championship trophy at this year’s Trainer’s Challenge finals at Westerner Park in Red Deer.

“The Trainer’s Challenge is such a great opportunity for us to come together and learn from each other,” he said after receiving his trophy from Diane Anderson of Tymarc Art Studio. “It’s not about winning or losing, because when we can learn together we really all become winners.”

McNabb’s positive and encouraging attitude was evident throughout the weekend, and he kept this same mindset in the finals. “We’re on a time clock during the finals, but a horse doesn’t understand what that means,” he said during his ride. “So, you really have to take your time and hurry slowly. I’ve also got to make sure that I’m giving him as much as he’s giving me. Continue Reading »

Wild Pink Yonder Ride

Anybody got any photos or news about the Wild Pink Yonder Ride? We would love to share news with the horse world about how the ride is going. If you see the riders or have seen them and took some photos, send us some photos and/or your comments and we will post them and give you credit with a link to your website. We hear there has been some fantastic support from the towns they have been staying at from reading Jane Hurl’s Blog which she is posting from her hospital bed (if you are curious about why just read this post in her blog). Here is one tough, brave lady.

Trucks

I hardly know a Ford from a Chev and couldn’t tell you what kind of truck any of my neighbours drive – I might know the color. And now I am faced with having to get a different truck to pull my horse trailer. I need some advice from some of you with trailer hauling experience

Really it wasn’t me who needed the new  bigger, heavier trailer. It was Dave and Keeper. Keeper wasn’t really impressed with the lack of roominess in her stall and Dave kind of had the same problem. Then he saw this trailer on the Northernhorse Classifieds and soon we were off looking at it and he was telling me how our little 3/4 truck (with souped-up something or others that made it tougher) was going to be just loving to pull this thing. And it is only 3 feet longer. And we could get “air bags”. Continue Reading »

Horse Rescue

I received an inquiry today that reads:

“I am looking to rescue a couple of horses from the feedlot buyers.  What type of auction do I need to go to?  I am looking for young horses to ride, training is not important”.

I would suppose that knowing the location of the person making the request would help us make suggestions as I doubt one would have to travel too far to find a couple of horses that need rescuing. Maybe some folks reading this will have some good ideas? I would think most of them end up in the local auction sales? Perhaps there are feedlots that let you go through and pick out ones to buy? Sounds like this is an opportunity for a few youngsters to find a good home. There is a “comment” link below where you can discuss your suggestions. Continue Reading »
