Breeding Your Mare With Cooled Transported Semen

  1. The mare should be initially prepared as if you were going to send her to Countryside Farms:  16 hours daily light, uterine culture, and/or biopsy, etc.

  2. When you or your Veterinarian determine the first day of heat of your mare, contact Countryside Farms immediately (preferably by fax).

  3. Ship your Equitainer to the farm by Fedex.  Have your veterinarian follow follicle progression on a daily basis.

  4. When the mare is approximately 48 hours from ovulation, contact Countryside Farm to order semen by 10 pm (M.S.T.) the night prior collection day.  Collection days are Monday through Friday.  Shipments are sent "Collect" via Fedex, Purolator or by Air (counter to counter).

  5. Normally, Countryside Farms will ship two doses of semen/container according to the demand of that particular collection day (refer to clause 8 of the Transported cooled Semen Contract).  One dose will contain approximately 1 billion progressively motile sperm cells.

  6. When the semen arrives, do not open the container until the veterinarian arrives and is ready to inseminate the mare.

  7. Remove the semen from the shipping container and close it immediately if the second dose is to be used 24 hours later.  Inseminate the mare with the entire dose.  Do not warm the semen prior to putting it in the mare.

  8. Complete the breed collection/insemination certificate and return it to stallion owner in a timely manner (next day).

  9. Pregnancy check mare 14-16 days from the day of ovulation, and notify Countryside Farms immediately on the pregnancy status (preferably by fax).

Hopefully, this procedure is straight forward and easy to understand.  Please feel free to advise Countryside Farms of your concerns and questions.
