Genetic Defects in Quarter Horses and Paints
There are several genetic defects that should be of great concern to Quarter Horse and Paint Horse breeders. There are genetic tests that can be done to determine if their horses are carriers of any of these genetic defects. The test involves pulling hairs by the roots from mane or tail and mailing to a genetic testing lab.
We have tested both of our stallions, and have posted their results on their website pages. We hope this helps all mare owners make informed, educated breeding decisions.
HYPP (Hyperkalemic periodic paralysis): Linked to the great stallion, Impressive. Characterized by uncontrollable muscle twitching and substantial muscle weakness, paralysis or death. HYPP is a dominant gene, so only one parent has to have the gene in order to pass the disease on to offspring and for offspring to exhibit symptoms. 50% chance of foal inheriting the dominant gene.
HERDA (Hereditary Equine Regional Dermal Asthenia): Linked to the sire line of the great foundation stallion, Poco Bueno. The great Western Pleasure sire, Zippo Pine Bar is also a known carrier. HERDA is a collagen defect that results in the layers of skin not being held firmly together. When a horse is ridden or suffers trauma to the skin, the outer layer often splits or separates from the deeper layer, it rarely heals without disfiguring scars. In dramatic cases, the skin can split along the back and even roll down the sides, literally skinning the horse alive. Most horses must be euthanized for humane reasons between 2 - 4 years of age. HERDA is caused by a recessive gene, so the disease can only be transmitted to offspring if both parents carry the gene, and pass it on to the foal. Horses who are carriers of the gene exhibit no symptoms. If both parents carry the gene, there is a 25% chance the foal will be born with the disease.
GBED (Glycogen Branching Enzyme Deficiency): Linked to the great stallion, King P-234, and perhaps to his sire, Zantanon. Almost 90% of Quarter Horses trace some part of their lineage to Zantanon. A genetic disease where the horse is lacking an enzyme necessary for string glycogen, the horse's heart muscle and skeletal muscles cannot function, leading to rapid death. Occurs in foals who are homozygous for the GBED gene, meaning both parents carry one copy of the gene and passed it on to the foal. Affected foals born alive are weak, have low body temperature and require warming, need assistance to nurse, might have slightly contracted tendons, develop seizures or respiratory distress, become too weak to stand, or die suddenly. No foal has lived past 18 weeks even with aggressive treatment. At least 3% of late term abortions and stillbirths are caused by this disease. Probably carried by 10% of Quarter Horses, and therefore is found in Paints too. If both parents carry the gene, there is a 25% chance the resulting foal will die of the disease.
OLWS (Overo Lethal White Syndrome): Recessive gene, so if both parents carry the gene, and create a homozygous foal, it is usually pure white in colour, and suffers with a non-functioning colon, causing death within a day or two of birth. If both parents carry the gene, there is a 25% chance that the foal will have the disease.

Standing At Stud To The Public - Spring 2011
SPP Hezablonde Andy
SPP Hezablonde Andy passed his breeding test year as a 2 year old with flying colours, and we have "Andy" babies due in Spring 2011.
He was so well behaved during the hand breeding process, we decided to start his riding training DURING his breeding season. He did so well under saddle, moved with a naturally low head set, was such a beautiful jogger, and looked like a spectacular all around stallion, that we decided to breed ALL of our mares to him. We are very excited to see his offspring, especially the crosses on our good moving riding mares! We have big hopes for him as a great All-Around Producer. We are totally amazed with him!! He kept his nice quiet disposition, his focus, his work ethic, all while only 2 years old, while breeding, and while in riding training. UNBEATABLE, EXCEPTIONAL, AMAZING disposition. VERY FERTILE too. Sometimes breeding twice a day for days in a row!
Will stand to the public in Spring 2011.

We are very proud to say that we bred and raised Tux, before he was sold to the Stonehockers in Dec. of his yearling year, and measured 16h at the hip at that time. He has matured to 16.1h and has proven to be a very versatile and successful show horse for the Stonehockers -- Thank you for all your hard work and dedication in bringing out the true potential and talents of Tux.
His dam is our own mare, UR OH SO ROYAL, now an APHA WORLD CHAMPION PRODUCER!!!

2010 APHA Youth World Champion -- Our own Rock Star Tuxedo
Rock Star Tuxedo, 2010 APHA World Champion
We are very proud of Rock Star Tuxedo. We bred our good mare, Ur Oh So Royal, 15.3h black tobiano, to Black Rock Star, 16h black tobiano, and were given this beautiful colt. The cross was magic! "Tux" was sold as a yearling into the capable hands of Amy and Terri Stonehocker, Colorado. Here is their story of Tux's very successful 2010 APHA World Show as told by Amy Stonehocker ---
"He was a good boy, but the arena shook him, we were placing really well with less then perfect goes. We had two seconds in horsemanship which is my best class. That was Tux's first time goat tying I have done it on my other horse for several years and thought it would be fun to teach Tux some speed events. He can run a 17 second barrel patterns after only a few practice runs. He is getting good at jumping and really enjoys it, he will be a amazing hunter when he is a little more seasoned. He has a great mind and loves learning new events. He has surpassed my expectations for him. I am looking forward to showing him next year in classic amateur. Some highlights from our year are: circuit champion Nov Youth Showmanship National Western Stock Show, circuit champion Nov youth Showmanship and Nov youth horsemanship Tulsa March Mania, High point novice youth at the two Nebraska shows we went to. In the Colorado clubs year-end standings we were hi-point Novice youth and hi-point 14-18 for HPPHC and hi-point novice youth and reserve hi-point 14-18 for the RMPHC. For zone 3 year end top twenty we are second place. Tux now has 5 novice youth ROMs and for 14-18 youth 5 ROMs and 2 superiors. We ended up 3 points away from getting a youth versatility award, that was poor planning on my part, at the beginning of the year we were just showing novice youth trying to get ready for worlds and never dreamed we could get enough points for that title. Tux is still 100% sound, he has never been injected or treated for any lameness and he still is barefoot."

Rock Star Tuxedo - update from new owners
Amy & Tux portrait
Tux was sold to Terri & Amy Stonehocker from Denver, Colorado as a yearling colt in late 2006. I just received this great news from them:
To quote Terri: "Amy and Tux made their debut at the National Western this week. She showed him in halter, showmanship, horsemanship, and hunter under saddle. He placed under all six judges in halter and they were third overall in showmanship. All the top youth from around the country were there and Tux fit right in. Amy will be showing him in all the High Plains and Rocky Mountain shows this year. We are so happy with Tux. He is coming along so well with his training and is going to be amazing at hunter under saddle and really takes well to trail. Thank you for raising this great horse"
