Free and wild
The Government of Alberta, Sustainable Resource Development, department has launched what we believe a full scale assault on the wild horses of Alberta. This year there are more individuals with permits and more capture pens set up than there have been for several years. SRD has issued this many permits and encouraged these individuals to take a large number of the wild horses out of their natural environment. WHOAS believes that contrary to what the officials say that they are bowing to pressure from self vested groups who want all the horses removed from our Alberta foothills.
Last year the SRD started this campaign and authorized the removal of a large number of horses throughout the province. We know that the large majority of those captured ended up being sent to a horse slaughter plant. Again this year the number of horses that are being captured is high. Silently the government of Alberta has changed the horse capture regulations to a point that they reflect the determination of the SRD to rid the province of what they believe are nuisance animals. Where it used to be 3 studs to one mare, this does not even exist anymore. Where they used to claim that they regulated how many animals “at the most 20-30 horses” this number seems to have been thrown out the window. Also we’ve noted that once the capture season was over, these individuals did not remove their capture pens as was the rule before. This allows our wild horses to become accustomed to these threats and therefore more susceptible to being caputured.

Captured horses

Death permit

This season continues until March 1st and many of the mares are now heavy with foal. Imagine the stress!!!! These alleged cowboys have no other interest other than the money they get from the slaughter houses. And with slaughter prices for horses being so low, it appears to WHOAS that some are just doing this for their own egos.
The winters of 2010 and 2011 were extremely hard on the wild horses. A large number of foals died and many of the mares aborted in order to survive. Therefore the number of horses due to nature was naturally down. According to our observations, and those of others that spend their time in the west country, the number of horses truly did not increase due to this and the heavy capture last year. In fact WHOAS believes that the numbers are down and will continue to go that way if the SRD continues their attack against your Alberta wild horses. It is well known that they are listening to logging companies that claim the wild horses are doing damage to the environment and their new seedlings. This is despite all the scientific evidence to the contrary. In large tracks of our public land the logging companies have decimated the natural environment of practically all wild animals and birds that used to call this home. Who’s hurting what out there? We believe they should leave the horses alone. Now these logging companies are going down into Kananaskis country to ruin it too (the Castle and West Bragg Creek) with the blessings of the SRD.
The SRD chooses to manipulate issues to benefit their ideas with disregard to the well being of the natural ecosystem’s of Alberta. I point out that in the Sheep River, Bighorn Sheep Reserve it is amazing to see one sign that says that the government biologists say that the bighorn sheep are causing damage to their grazing area since the sheep feel safe in this area and do not move. Yet a short distance down the road on the same rangeland is a sign by the government stating that they use hundreds of head of cattle to reduce the biomass of the sheep range allegedly to enhance available forage for wildlife. Is this not a contradiction?
With the upcoming election, now is the time to make our government, who is supposed to work for us, pay attention to what Albertans value as part of our natural heritage and stop destroying our land and the wonderful animals, including the wild horses, that live there. We urge you to get as many people as possible to write (e-mail) directly to the Premier and the Minister of Sustainable Resources. We need to stop this capture season now and not later!!!! Please help. Ask your friends to join the fight to save your wild horses. They belong to all of us.

Hi, Thanks for this update. I have sent an email as suggested. Have you considered contacting an online organization like Avaaz? If this issue could get the support of their online community with a campaign, awareness and potentially pressure on the AB government could effectively and quickly be generated. Their website is http://www.avaaz.org and you can send an email in the contact us section to suggest an online campaign. I would really like to see this stopped as well.

Oh Canada isn’t it sick enough to be a major horse slaughtering country?
Now the wildies ….enough already with the barbaric politices. Iam not proud to be a Canadian any more!

I have been sending pics. and asking Premier Alison Redford to pass a LAW to protect Alberta,Wild Horses ..

I hate to see OUR wild horses disappearing! The government knows that their linked back to the Spanish Mustang they just sont care ! Makes me sick! I cant remember what the documentry is called but its about a band of native amaricans in Alberta that are trying thier best to save the wild horses as theyve been ‘a big part of their history. They even had some of the horses blood tested and it showed that the Spanish Mustang was in there. Save the Mustangs !

Thinking outside the box a bit. Why not use the resources (financial and otherwise) to capture just the wild studs and pay (or subsidize) vets to geld them. After a couple of years of gelding the young stud colts, the problem is solved. May not result in zero conception rates, but will definitely help.

Horses destroy their environment!! Only man can. Just take a look at clear cut logging where man destroys everything.

This is heartbreaking to read.

The wild ones in the U.S. are under siege as well.

I have sent an email as suggested. Also, I have attached a link to another article regarding this subject. This article has a video at the end to show exactly how much stress is put on these poor horses if anyone needs more verification on why this practice is wrong.

Horses damaging the environment? How about the many, many, many weekend warriors that take their atvs out west and absolutely destroy the environment? They do way more damage than a few wild horses believe me! I have personally seen the destruction left by those who have no regard for our wilderness. Just my two cents…..

Alert !! This must stop . Horses are not hunt animals . I am so devastated by what is going on. When will the cruelty end ?? What are you teaching our children if we destroy their heritage? this is so wrong.

This is ridiculous that horses are a nuisance….you are just thinking of the money. Have you thought of fencing the areas……you wont be happy till you have wiped them all off the land……then what will you do……I am from the UK and am disgusted of this mass killing of horses…..

NO WONDER THE WORLDS IN A MESS WITH PEOPLE LIKE THIS WANTING TO KILL ANIMALS THAT ARE AS MUCH A PART OF LIFE AS THEY ARE. THERE ARE NO RULES FOR WILD HORSES ONLY THAT THEY BELONG TO NO MAN AND THAT NATURE TAKES CARE OF ITSELF. THERE IS SO MUCH FOR THE EVIL HUMAN TO LEARN, TO PUT ANY BLAME ON HORSES IS NOT RIGHT. SEARCH YOUR SOULS AND QUESTION WHY YOU WANT TO KILL INNOCENT BEAUTIFUL HORSES ??? YOU PROBABLY DON’T KNOW HOW TO DO THAT !!

Horses destroying the environment, what a poor and ignorant excuse to get rid of the wild horses! How sad!

I am only in my early teens but I feel the need to do something about these beautiful animals. From a very early age, I’ve loved them so much and dreamed about them running wild and free. I can’t believe there are so little wild horses now! I am not against the government in itself but I definitely agree that we should protect this important part of our western heritage. How are they a nuisance? In English class at school we are writing speeches to be recited in front of the class. I’m doing mine on the wild horses of Canada and how they need to be protected. People just don’t care. We can’t let wild horses disappear! We need to let people know about their dwindling numbers and that there are wild horses here that really need to be protected.

The politicians will be coming to our doors to ask for our votes
soon. I think this will be a good opportunity to ask each candidate
regardless of what party, on their stand on preserving our mustangs.

I have had the opportunity to talk to quite a number of people about
our wild horses lately and find that a lot of horse lovers in the large urban centers did not know that they even exist, but are shocked that the SRD wants to eliminate them. So lets spread the word.

Why is it so important to kill or capture these beautiful horses? They are not hurting anyone or destroying the land like humans are doing….this makes me so sick and all I can say to all these heartless people doing these roundups is “what goes around, comes around”. You will pay dearly for destroying God’s creatures…. Humans have NOT evolved, they are still neanderthals who think hunting and killing is a “sport”….

This is disgusting on the part of Canada! Leave these animal alone. Please!

Like in America, despite the opposition and protests, horses are being tragically and senselessly put to death. Like wolves, there is a deliberate attack on these animals, who hold a sacred place in the heart of humans. Surely this affects our hearts globally, affects the Earth, diminishing the pure essence of life on this beautiful planet. May humanity step up their guardianship of the Earth, and all of her sacred animals. United we are stronger than any government! All we have to do is unite in peaceful, positive action :)

Here we go AGAIN! The U.S has been doing this for 20 yrs. This is madness====THIS MUST END. Our Governments are not acting on the behalf of our Animals. Did you read the part ===THE COWBOYS HAVE A VESTED INTEREST IN THE ROUND-UPS ===THEY MAKE THE MONEY FROM THE SLAUGHTER HOUSES–HOW ABOUT BEING A REAL COWBOY AND PROTECT THE ANIMAL Y=O=U= DEPEND ON . Sorry ive been up all night getting donations for a 23 yr old Dunn headed for slaughter. Youd think they would give her kudos for Surviving in the wild and being healthy enough to endure a Round-up. AM I Going Crazy or are we totally out of control==Peace to All Creatures

Why is Canada becoming so self destructing.Canada is a beautiful country renown for the wildlife and openspaces, wildhorses are part of our history. They belong wild and free! Stop killing everything! You fenced up the Native peoples and now you are vanishing the Mustangs! Please don’t strip Canada of this handful of heritage.

If those people think that the horses are doing the damage to Alberta’s land then they must have brain damage. If they think that a couple of hoofprints are REALLY BAD, then they look behind them if they have a couple of footprints behind them they have no call about what happens to the wild horses. Their the ones cutting down all the trees, thier the ones that are killing the environment so they shouldnt have any say about what happens to those wild horses. They are a lot better at surviving thAn us humans are, but they get no credit for that. The stupid SRD is just “let’s kill the wild horses cause we can” they don’t care about anyone but themselves it makes me sick.

We camp out at Mountainaire and have noticed this past weekend a makeshift corral and wondered what was happening. There are numerous hoses missing, once we could count 5 – 6 groups ranging from 6-10 horses, now we could only find 1 herd of 6. How come I have not heard anything on the news? There was a great commotion and public uprising when a few horses where shot. RCMP, SRD, government resources were spent tracking down the induviduals responsible for the henious crime and now they are sanctioning this because the poor clear cut loggers are losing a few of their seedlings? Come out our way, the clear cut loggers have done more damage out there then all the horses, atv’ers, equestrians and whoever else could do in a million years. Did not a celebrity put up a reward for the capture of the horse murderers, where are these people now? The public needs to be brought aware of what our government is doing right now and our so called protectors of the wild (SRD) participating in this slaughter of innocent animals. We atv out in this area and are constantly maintaing trails not only for our families bu for everyone else out there including equestrians. To say our sport destroys the wilderness we love is ludicrous, there are always a few bad with the good as in any other sport but for the most part we try and leave it better than we found it.

For Gods sake can’t we leave anything alone. I am disgusted. There is not much left in this country that we have to look back on with much pride. I am sure our forefathers are disgusted as well. For a change, someone in the provincial and federal governmenst, DO SOMETHING THAT WE CAN LOOK BACK ON AND MAYBE BE PROUD OF!!!! Leave the wild horses and much of the other wildlife alone!!!!! Let’s work on dealing with the drugs that are brought into this country, and the gang members we so graciously let into Canada everyday!!! They are doing a whole lot more harm than the wild horse has ever or ever will do.

We have to let our politicians know what we think. What can one person do alone? Not much, but as a collective voice we can be heard, and hopefully can do something! You must email or write letters to the politicians!!

I think it is an absolute disgrace. Nothing is sacred anymore. I’m 28 years old and I have 3 young children who are raised on a farm and see the day to day activities that go on with our horses and cows. What are we teaching them for 1? That it’s ok to just take out any animal that’s “destroying” the land? And 2nd, what are our kids going to be able to see that’s wild? Besides a poor animal that’s been ripped out of its habitat and thrown in a cage so people can look at them thru bars? What the hell is wrong with people? Makes me proud to be Albertan.

What I want to know is, have the media taken this story and ran with it? I think we all recall how many people were infuriated with the stories of the Wild Horse shootings in this area….and these stories went to other countries. If made fully aware that our very own government, who are supposed to be acting on the general public’s behalf (ha ha) are actually killing multitudes of horses by these indirect acts, how would the masses react. And if we could find a bigger voice…because we know by the reactions to the stories around the shootings….could we find a way to put a stop to this barbaric and horrendous thing that our very own government is sanctioning? I am appalled at the treatment of these magnificent animals who, in every history book, have been our commrads, our friends, and our salvation. People who find it justifiable to harm them and end their lives, in my opinion, have no soul and have no business existing amongst such noble and soulful creatures. I am sickened by these kinds of people and what is happening right under our noses.

Too late people, I was out there this weekend. Very few left and I am sure in a couple of weeks there will be none left. There is no quota they are all to be removed and slaughtered. The lucky few that do escape capture will be doomed to a life of solitude and eventually die off because there are not enough to procreate. Too little too late, thanks to our provincial government and their scorched earth policy. We who look upon third world countries in disgust when they slash and burn their countryside, wake up and smell the roses people,it is happening in our back yard with the good graces of our government.

It is appauling to see that once again politics and egotistical actions trumps leaving nature alone. Why not turn the wild horse issue into an ecotourism business…..anyone ever thought of that??

I agree with the comments here wholeheartedly. However we are “preaching to the choir” so to speak. Those of us on this site are aware and agree this is terribly wrong. We must go beyond this website and forum to the media & politicians. We must let others know
who, if they were aware of this situation (and I only became aware when a friend posted this link on her Facebook), would also tell the media and those who can do something about the wild horses’ plight.
Let’s lobby the Alberta and our federal government. Let other countries know what we do do our beautiful wild animals. Use social media…Facebook, Twitter etc.

Something to say?
